It took a couple of hours to get to the 15th century Abuna Yemata Guh church, hewn into the cliffside of a 2000-foot
spire in the Tigray region of Ethiopia. Some parts of the ascent were climbing sheer rock face. The last bit is a 2 foot-wide path with a 700-foot drop on your left. My bare feet helped for grip. The reward is a lovely sanctuary filled with candles, drums, massive old books, and wonderful ancient frescoes of Ethiopian saints adorning the walls and ceiling. This photo is of the Ethiopian Orthodox priest who took me up there (he has the keys to this holy place) standing just past the door, with a breathtaking view of Gheralta in the background.
